New documents uncovered about the Planned Parenthood Federation of America reveal the president of the national abortion business makes almost $400,000 annually in combined salary and benefits.

Cecile Richards, the daughter of former Texas Governor Ann Richards, received a salary of $385,163 plus $11,876 in benefits and deferred compensation.

That’s according to the Internal Revenue Service Form 990 Planned Parenthood filed in 2008 — the last year in which the abortion business released a public annual report showing additional financial information.

Planned Parenthood released a factsheet in September showing its local and regional affiliates did 324,008 abortions in 2008.

But CNS News looked into the IRS records and discovered the financial compensation Richards receives.

The IRS records from 2009 show Richards received less in direct salary but much more in benefits and compensations. CNS indicates the documents show received a salary of $346,285 but $38,476 in total compensation, according to the June 30, 2009 Form 990 the abortion business submitted.

The records also revealed Planned Parenthood received $349.6 million in taxpayer dollars combined from federal, state and local governments for the fiscal year ending June 2008 — an increase from the $337 million it received the year prior.

Looking at Planned Parenthood data from 1997 to the present, the increase in government funding corresponds with an increase in the number of abortions. (See image)

In 1997, Planned Parenthood did about 160,000 abortions and received approximately $160 million in total taxpayer funding from various levels of government. Both the number of abortions and the amount of money received from government, supposedly for family planning to reduce abortions, has more than doubled since then.

The abortion totals from 2008 were a 6.1 percent increase over the 305,310 abortions it did in 2007.

The 2007 figure was itself a 5.3 percent increase over the 289,750 abortions Planned Parenthood did in 2006.

With approximately 1.2 million abortions done annually in the United States via surgical abortions or the dangerous RU 486 (mifepristone) abortion drug, Planned Parenthood has moved from doing 25 to 27 percent of all abortions at a time when Alan Guttmacher Institute, its former research arm, has showed abortions at near-historic lows.

While abortions are on the rise at Planned Parenthood, adoption referrals declined to just 2,405 — a 51 percent drop since 2007. Planned Parenthood now does 134 abortions for every adoption referral it makes.

The abortion business also helped only 9,433 prenatal clients, down substantially from the 11,000 women it provided prenatal care to in 2007.

Combined with the number of abortion referrals, 96.5 percent of pregnant women going to Planned Parenthood had abortions while just 3.5 percent of pregnant women received non-abortion services including adoption and prenatal care.

Planned Parenthood made just 2,410 adoption referrals in 2006 and only 4,912 referrals in 2007.
