Pro-Life Groups Celebrate Komen De-Funding Planned Parenthood

Leading pro-life groups across the nation are celebrating the decision of the Komen for the Cure breast cancer charity to revoke hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding for the Planned Parenthood abortion business.

The following is a sample of some of the responses:

Americans United for Life president Charmaine Yoest: As a breast cancer survivor, I applaud the decision made by the Komen Foundation to discontinue their partnership with the billion-dollar, abortion mega-provider, Planned Parenthood. The work of the Komen Foundation has life-saving potential and should not be intertwined with an industry dealing in death. When I learned that the foundation was using donated funds to support abortion providers, I stopped running in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. In the future, I’ll be racing with them to support this courageous decision.

Family Research Council: We applaud Susan G. Komen for the Cure for putting women’s health first rather than fund the nation’s largest abortion provider. For too long many people of good will gave money to this foundation to help stop the scourge of breast cancer, not realizing that their money was going to help subsidize the nation’s largest abortion provider.

Planned Parenthood’s abortion numbers have increased each year, now at nearly 330,000, despite the fact that the nation’s abortion rate has been dropping. Planned Parenthood has claimed they provide mammogram services for women but recently admitted they do not. Susan G. Komen is right to be concerned about the investigations of Planned Parenthood. The abortion organization has been exposed for covering up statutory rape cases and has a history of Medicaid over-billing and other financial misconduct. [related]

Susan G. Komen’s decision to stop funding the abortion industry is good news for women seeking help dealing with breast cancer. This is also good news for the lives of many unborn babies. Congress should also act accordingly given that Planned Parenthood receives over $487 million annually in state and federal funds. If Susan G. Komen can chose to stop subsidizing the abortion giant, surely Congress can redirect its resources to those helping women, not making a profit off the lives of unborn children,” concluded Perkins.

Care Net: Komen’s mission is one that affects every woman: our mothers, our sisters, and our daughters, and it’s a mission we fully endorse. We applaud their decision to stop providing grants to Planned Parenthood, the largest provider of abortions in the U.S. Planned Parenthood has a reputation for putting their agenda ahead of the best interest of the women they serve, which clearly contradicts the core beliefs of the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

I am confident that other organizations will be able to use these grant monies from the Komen Foundation to effectively fight breast cancer. Planned Parenthood affiliates received more than $600,000 from the Komen Foundation last year for their work conducting breast exams, as they do not offer mammograms.

Operation Rescue:  We commend the Susan G. Komen Foundation for its decision to halt grants to Planned Parenthood in the wake of funding scandals that have resulted in a Congressional investigation of Planned Parenthood. For years, the pro-life movement, including Operation Rescue, has protested Komen’s distribution of an estimated $700,000 a year to Planned Parenthood. This money only went to enabling Planned Parenthood to continue prey on women in order to sell them abortions.

Planned Parenthood does not always follow the law. Let’s not forget that in Kansas, Planned Parenthood’s abortion clinic in Overland Park faces 58 criminal charges related to illegal late-term abortions. Operation Rescue and other pro-life groups have conducted investigations that show Planned Parenthood fails to report child sex abuse and trafficking. Planned Parenthood of Golden Gate in California was disbanded due to financial improprieties.

While Planned Parenthood claims that abortions account for only three percent of their business, documents show that abortion fees account for 40% of its income. Furthermore 97.6 percent of pregnant women going to Planned Parenthood are sold abortions while less than 2.4 percent of pregnant women receive non-abortion services. Planned Parenthood remains America’s largest abortion supplier, responsible for 27.6 percent of all abortions done nationally.

Silent No More Awareness Campaign: This is more than welcome news, especially to the post-abortive women of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign who are breast cancer survivors. Of the 70 epidemiological studies that have been conducted worldwide since 1957, 80% report a risk increase of breast cancer for women who have had abortions. The Susan G. Komen Foundation’s donations to Planned Parenthood were as nonsensical as would be the American Lung Association donating to a tobacco manufacturer.

No one is more anxious to find a cure for breast cancer than the women of Silent No More. This is a plague that affects us personally and deeply. We recently lost a dear co-worker to breast cancer; the disease is all too familiar to our membership. On behalf of the breast cancer victims and survivors of Silent No More, I can’t thank the Susan G. Komen Foundation enough for this decision.

Human Life International:  We are deeply grateful that the leadership of Komen for the Cure has taken the courageous step of separating themselves from the largest abortion provider in the United States, Planned Parenthood. While vicious attacks have already been levied against them by abortion supporters on web sites and across social media, a number of pro-life and pro-family groups and individuals are sharing sincere thanks and praise as well.

The more organizations and companies who recognize Planned Parenthood for what it is – a corrupt, divisive and destructive fraud perpetrated against women’s health, and especially against children – the more people of faith and reason can join together in supporting causes that truly improve women’s health.
