The 4th of July probably means more to pro-lifers and all true patriots than any date in modern history. On this day in 1776, our Founding Fathers declared “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Our guarantee to every person’s right to life was violently taken from our unborn children in the vicious Roe v. Wade decision in 1973.
Our own right to religious liberty is under real threat by the HHS Mandate contained in the Affordable Care Act, popularly known as Obamacare.
And our very right to the pursuit of happiness is under fierce attack as we worry about our own futures under a tyrannical administration, and fear that our children will face huge debts and a socialist system to replace the freedom and opportunities of the country we have known and loved.
These are real fears this 4th of July. Yet, these very fears and concerns make us perhaps more closely identified with the very patriots who celebrated the first Independence Day 236 years ago on that day in 1776.
Those first revolutionaries faced possible confiscation of their property, loss of the freedom they had not yet secured, and even death. Their signing of that declaration called on courage and determination, and they were willing to take those very real and terrible risks to assure these rights for themselves and their posterity.
They fought on with all the hope and courage they could muster to make our independence become a reality. Yes, they won that Independence for us as well as for themselves. And now we must fight just as hard as they did in order to keep it.
Today we are in real danger from an out-of-control government. In many ways our enemy is far worse than King George III.
The Founding Fathers fought over a small tax on tea and too many restrictions on freedom. We fight a sixteen trillion dollar national debt, and soaring taxes that may include a tax for not supporting a vague and mysterious two-thousand page health plan. They fought for their lives while we fight for the lives of our unborn.

They pursued the happiness of freedom from a tyrant and we seek happiness in order and morality, and for the right to follow our religious beliefs. Yes, we can identify with our Founding Fathers and we must imitate those whose signatures are on the document seeking life, liberty and pursuit of happiness this 4th of July, 2012.
We have come full circle. As they won their independence, so must we win ours. They had no assurance that their call for independence would be answered. Neither do we.
But just as those who celebrated the first July 4th called on God for their victory over evil, so do we call on God. Hear us, O Lord, as you heard them.
