A report by the Care Quality Commission published in December found major safety flaws at the organisation’s clinics, with more than 2,600 serious incidents reported in 2015; forcing MSI to suspend services for underage girls and vulnerable women. Now, a report published after a surprise inspection in February has uncovered a new list of problems and failings.
The new inspection found that 11 women needed emergency transfers to hospital between October and December 2016. One needed surgery to repair her cervix, two received blood transfusions and another had a bacterial infection.
Botched abortions
In another two month period, the report says, 373 women had to have follow up treatment following failed abortions.
Other serious failings include the discovery of an unregistered nurse working at the Brixton clinic, consent being obtained from a patient after the abortion had happened, and ‘issues with infection prevention and control’.

Further enforcement
The report states that MSI has not complied with several of the warning notices served as a result of the original inspection, including one on “Safe care and treatment”. The summary letter from Professor Sir Mike Richards, Chief Inspector of Hospitals, says that the “CQC will be undertaking further enforcement action, monitoring Marie Stopes International closely, and reviewing its progress.”
One of the actions MSI was told it MUST take to improve is: “Ensure that the World Health Organisation (WHO) Five Steps to Safer Surgery checklist is completed accurately, used appropriately at each phase of the surgical procedure and quality audit is undertaken.”
Close them down
These further damning revelations come as thousands of people have signed a petition, jointly organised by SPUC and LIFE, calling on the health secretary to strip MSI – which carries out 70,000 abortions a year, 60,000 of them paid for by the NHS – of its licence to perform abortions.
