On Friday, the Washington Post reported that the Germantown (Maryland) Reproductive Health Services, owned by notorious late-term abortionist Dr. Leroy Carhart, “plans to close its doors and is under contract to be purchased by an antiabortion group that has worked for many years to shut it down.”
According to the Post’s Michael Alison Chandler and Steve Hendrix, Carhart’s Germantown abortion clinic is one of only three that performs “late-term abortions.” The other two are in Boulder, Colorado and Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Carhart quickly assured supporters that he plans to open another clinic nearby. The Post reported a statement which included the promise, “I am doing everything in my power to keep my practice open, and I am considering options looking toward the future.”
Added Diana Philip, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland, “I have spoken to Dr. Carhart and he is in the process of trying to get his facility operating.” He told Chandler and Hendrix, “It will be the same clinic staff and they are hoping not to have any interruption in providing this service.”
But it may be more complicated than that. “It’s not the only clinic closure for Maryland,” reports Rachel Kurzius.
“Prince George’s Reproductive Health Services, which has the same owner as the Germantown facility, is also shuttering”
Indeed, if you go to the website abortionpages.com, you read, “Germantown Reproductive Health Services & Prince Georges Reproductive Health Services Have BOTH Permanently CLOSED.”
The short post continues, “All patient medical records are being maintained as required by law” and finishes by explaining how women can access their clinic records.

In 2010, “Carhart, now 75, began commuting long-distance to Maryland to work at the Germantown clinic after Nebraska made it illegal to perform most abortions beyond 20 weeks,” the Post reported.
Previously, he was the plaintiff in two leading Supreme Court abortion cases. In 2000 Carhart prevailed in Stenberg v. Carhart, a challenge to Nebraska ban on Partial-Birth abortions. He lost in 2007 in Gonzales v. Carhart in which the High Court upheld the federal Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act.
