Abortion activists are spending huge chunks of cash to defeat Illinois U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, one of the last pro-life Democrats in Congress, in the state primary Tuesday.
Though Lipinski is an incumbent who has represented his district for seven terms, the Democratic Party refused to endorse him this year.
Some of the richest, most powerful pro-abortion groups in America, including NARAL, Planned Parenthood and Emily’s List, are working to unseat him and backing his pro-abortion primary challenger, Marie Newman, a radical pro-abortion Democrat who supports abortion for any reason up to birth.
CNN reports the pro-abortion groups spent “into the six figures” to oppose Lipinski and support Newman. Planned Parenthood alone, the largest abortion chain in America, spent more than $150,000 to oppose Lipinski, according to the report.
According to the report:
More than $1.4 million in outside spending has come in to help Newman, while more than $1.1 million has been spent to aid Lipinski. …
Planned Parenthood’s group alone has spent more than $150,000 on everything from polling services to direct mail to advertising in order to help Newman and oppose Lipinski, the FEC data shows. On the flip side, groups like Susan B. Anthony List, which opposes abortion rights, have rallied to Lipinski’s cause. Nearly $120,000 from Susan B. Anthony List has been spent on not just ads and mailers but also money to fly canvassers to the district, put them up at hotels and transport them in vans to various neighborhoods.
Huffington Post reports more about the race:
Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.), an anti-abortion Democrat who refused to endorse President Barack Obama in 2012, could be casualty of the anti-Trump resistance movement on Tuesday night. Lipinski faces off in a primary race on Tuesday against challenger Marie Newman, a progressive businesswoman who supports a $15 per hour minimum wage and has hit Lipinski on his votes against reproductive rights, the DREAM Act, LGBTQ rights, and the Affordable Care Act.
“He likes to say he’s a centrist, he’s not. He is a Republican,” Newman told Vox. “There is not a division in the Democratic Party — he just is a dinosaur.”
But polls indicate Newman is the one who is out of touch with Democratic voters, especially on the abortion issue.
Lipinski repeatedly has voted in favor of common-sense abortion regulations that most Americans support. One of his most recent key votes was for the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which prohibits abortions after 20 weeks when unborn babies can feel pain. He consistently votes to protect unborn babies from late-term abortions and opposes taxpayer funding of abortions, two issues that are widely popular among Democrats and Republicans alike.

The Democratic Party has adopted an increasingly radical stance on abortion. In 2016, the DNC approved a platform calling for full support of abortion for any reason up to birth and taxpayer funding of abortions. Both are widely unpopular positions among the general public.
Democrats for Life estimates more than 23 million Democrats in the U.S. are pro-life. Pew Research found that 28 percent of Democrats say abortion should be illegal in most or all cases. Marist/KofC polling also found that 23 percent of Democrats consider themselves pro-life and 40 percent say abortion is morally wrong.
Many pro-lifers are leaving the Democratic Party because it has stopped supporting pro-life laws and advocates for life like Lipinski. A Massachusetts mayor recently announced his decision to leave, disgusted by the party’s demand that unborn babies be sacrificed and their deaths celebrated.
