Remember the 60 Million Unborn Babies Who Have Died in the Abortion Wars

It was a ritual as predictable as the blooming of tulips in the side yard flower bed…the nights of long drives through the steaming countryside…and the child-sized lounge chair I kept beneath a backyard tree as I heralded the beginning of summer.

Each Memorial Day, my parents, sister, and I would make a pilgrimage to the cemetery where my grandparents were buried. I knew them only in photographs—my mother’s mother had died a few years before I was born, and my mother’s father passed away when I was a baby.

We would say nothing during our cemetery visits, except to attempt a silent prayer. I knew this was hallowed ground, the burial plots for my ancestors. And I could see my mother fighting back tears as she gently placed flowers at the graves of her beloved parents.

But with the waves of sadness also came a profound peace, a belief that my grandparents had escaped the bonds of earth and that their souls had arrived in their heavenly home. I took great comfort in that thought.

But what of the 60 million preborn children who have died in the war against motherhood launched by the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade? Most perished without a monument, or even a name to call their own.

This Memorial Day weekend, I pay tribute to those who’ve erected memorials and crosses to children lost to abortion. You have honored the dignity of precious babies who never got a chance to taste a popsicle on a hot summer’s day or to see a row of daffodils blowing in the breeze or to hold their mother’s hand.

You have cherished those who were deemed expendable in the world created by seven Supreme Court justices.

As we mark Memorial Day, the day we honor those brave men and women who lost their lives in active military duty, let us hope and pray that some Memorial Day, in the not-too-distant future our families will once again be restored, never to broken again by the brutality of abortion.
