Pro-life Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith promised Thursday to oppose the nomination of Xavier Becerra as the secretary of health, noting that his experience is not in health care but in “filing lawsuits to go against anything that is pro-life.”

Y’all Politics reports Hyde-Smith, a Mississippi Republican, spoke out against President Joe Biden’s nominee Thursday at a news conference. A U.S. Senate committee held a confirmation hearing on Becerra earlier in the week.

“This nomination certainly, certainly concerns me, not only as a mother, not only as a woman, but as a legislator who has worked very hard through this COVID pandemic,” Hyde-Smith said.

She said Biden chose Becerra to run the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services even though he does not have any medical background.

Becerra, a career politician, is the attorney general of California and a former U.S. congressman. He has a radical pro-abortion record that includes prosecuting the undercover journalists who exposed Planned Parenthood’s aborted baby body parts tradesupporting partial-birth abortions and attempting to force the Little Sisters of the Poor, nuns who serve the poor and elderly, to fund abortions.

“His experience is filing lawsuits to go against anything that is pro-life,” Hyde-Smith said. “And as the AG in California, he used that position to do that there. He will use it here.”

She said Becerra’s record is extreme, too extreme for Americans.

“It is still pretty incredible that his name was put up,” she said. “I do not know him personally, but I certainly know his record. His record scares the American people. I know it scares the people in Mississippi. It’s such proof that this is definitely not the person that we need heading this agency.”

Though Becerra claims to be Catholic, his record involving unborn babies and those who work to protect them is terrible. As head of HHS, Becerra would have even more power to advance a radical anti-life agenda, including expanding late-term abortions on babies capable of feeling pain and forcing taxpayers to pay for their deaths.

Becerra’s record as a former congressman and attorney general do not bode well for the future of religious freedom, free speech or unborn babies’ right to life.

He defended a California law that forced pro-life pregnancy centers to post signs advertising abortions; however, he lost at the U.S. Supreme Court. And he challenged a Trump administration rule that defunded Planned Parenthood of about $60 million in Title X funds.

Becerra also sued the federal government in 2017 because President Donald Trump has instituted a pro-life rule to protect Christians from having to pay for forms of contraception that may cause abortions through the Obamacare abortion mandate. The Little Sisters of the Poor fought the lawsuit because they knew if the mandate were enforced and the pro-life rule overturn, their conscience rights would be in jeopardy.
