A new Marist University poll shows a majority of Americans want to either make abortions illegal or overturn Roe v. Wade, the infamous Supreme Court decision that ushered in an era of abortion on demand that has killed 63 million unborn babies.

The national survey shows 17% of Americans want to make aboritons totally illegal while another 44% wants Roe overturned so states can protect babies from abortions. Just 36% of Americans want killing babies in abortions to remain legal without limits.

The survey shows that 88% of Republicans and 60% of independents agree that abortion should be illegal or Roe overturned and even 36% of Democrats are on board with those legal protections for unborn children.

Ultimately, the poll shows 71% of Americans want aboritons to be made illegal or for more limits to be placed on them. Only 17% of Americans said abortion should be available during an entire pregnancy.

The national poll, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, shows a majority of Americans consider themselves pro-choice on abortion but the terms have become meaningless as subsequent questions in the poll confirm 4% of people who call themselves pro-choice actually want abortions to be illegal and another 35% want Roe overturned.

The poll found that a majority of Americans — 54% — oppose taxpayer funding of abortion, and 81% of Americans believe laws can protect both the mother and her unborn child.

“As we await a decision in the Supreme Court case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, our polling continues to show that over 60% of Americans reject the central holding of Roe v. Wade, and want to return the decision to the states or make abortion illegal,” said Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly of the Knights of Columbus. “Roe v. Wade was wrong when it was decided, and its legacy is the tragic destruction of more than 60 million unborn lives and
countless wounded women. The time has come for America to turn the page on Roe.”

“Our polling also shows that Americans oppose policies that divert tax dollars to pay for abortion here and abroad. This is especially relevant as the bipartisan Hyde Amendment prohibiting taxpayer funding of abortion is in danger,” added Mr. Kelly. “As a supermajority of Americans believe laws can protect both women and the unborn, the Knights of Columbus will continue to stand with them in supporting the dignity and worth of every human life.”

Other Key Findings:

– 63% of Americans oppose new federal rules that allow sending abortion pills through the mail instead of having women get them in-person.

– Three-quarters say doctors, nurses, or other health care professionals who have religious objections to abortion should not be forced to perform them.

– A majority (54%) believe organizations who have religious objections to abortion should not be legally required to provide insurance coverage for abortion.

– Nearly three-quarters (73%) of Americans either “oppose” or “strongly oppose” using tax dollars to support abortion abroad, including 59% who self-identify as pro-choice.

The new poll confirms the findings of other polls recently conducted on abortion that show a majority of Americans are pro-life.

Last year, Gallup found 52% of Americans take a pro-life position on abortion wanting all (19%) or almost all 33% abortions made illegal. The poll found just 45% of Americans take a pro-abortion position wanting all (32%) or almost all (13%) abortions legal. That is up from the 43% figure Gallup found last year. Only 32% of Americans agree with pro-abortion Joe Biden that all abortions should remain legal up to birth.

According to Gallup, 77% of Republicans want all or most abortions made illegal and 50% of independents and 30% of Democrats agree. Just 23% of Republicans want all or most abortions to remain legal and just 46% of independents agree as do most Democrats.

A new CBS News poll shows the majority of Americans oppose killing unborn babies in abortions or say they want more limits on abortion, which virtually unlimited in many states. The poll found just 43% of Americans think abortions should be generally available while 55% of Americans say it should either be more limited or should not be permitted altogether.

Another January 2020 poll, from Gallup, found a majority of Americans are dissatisfied with current laws allowing abortion on demand.

“Fifty-eight percent of Americans say they are dissatisfied with the nation’s policies on abortion, marking a seven-percentage-point increase from one year ago and a new high in Gallup’s trend,” it reported.

In the spring of 2019, a Hill-HarrisX survey found that 55 percent of voters said they do not think heartbeat laws are too restrictive – even though they would ban almost all abortions, according to The Hill.

Similarly, a Harvard CAPS/Harris poll found that just 6 percent of Americans said abortions should be allowed “up until the birth of the child.”

Meanwhile, another 2019 abortion poll found 58% of Americans want all or almost all abortions made illegal.

A poll conducted by the Morning Consult research firm finds most Americans want abortions to be made illegal either in all cases or in very rare cases such as rape or incest or win the pregnancy directly threatens the life of the mother. Those cases constitute less than 2 or 3% of all abortions, meaning that most Americans support making virtually all abortions illegal.

In 1973, the Supreme Court handed down the Roe v. Wade and Dole v. Bolton decisions that effectively took the decision-making process from states on abortion law and put it in the hands of 9 unelected judges. The decisions allowed virtually unlimited abortions and prohibited states from protecting unborn children from abortion except in the latter stages of pregnancy.
