Abuja, Nigeria (LifeNews.com) -- The World Congress of Families, an international pro-life group, held an important pro-life event featuring representatives of nations across Africa. With little in the way of organized pro-life activity, despite most African nations embracing pro-life cultures, the event was benefit for stopping the abortion agenda.

African nations have long been a target for well-funded abortion advocates from western countries to expand their pro-abortion agenda.

The event, called the "Dialogue of Civilizations" and held in Nigeria June 4-7, was an "unqualified success," according to its sponsors with more than 300 in attendance from Nigeria, Uganda, Cameroon, Ghana, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Foundation for African Cultural Heritage organized the conference, where speakers "decried attempts of international agencies and Western aid-givers to force abortion" on the continent.

Don Feder, the communications director for the World Congress of Families, spoke on the "Demographic Winter" and how abortion has resulted in underpopulation, worker shortages and other culture problems in many nations across the globe.

"Theresa Okafor, Sen. Izunaso and others of the Foundation for African Cultural Heritage did an exceptional job of putting this conference together," Feder told LifeNews.com. "I was impressed by the diversity of participants -- which included elected officials, academics, medical doctors and religious leaders -- who are united in support of the natural family."

"Several speakers referred to efforts to legalize abortion and ... impose 'Western values' on Africa," he added. "I reminded them that these are the values of Western elites, and that authentic Western values -- based on Judeo-Christian morality -- are the very opposite of those promoted by the UN, European Union, etc."

Speakers included Nigerian Senator Osita Izunaso; Theresa Okafor, Foundation for African Cultural Heritage; the Most Reverend Valerian Okeke, Archbishop of Onitsha Archdiocese; Mr. Nana Yaw Osei-Darkwa, Focus on the Family International, Ghana.

Along with the "Riga (Latvia) Family Forum" on May 15, the Nigeria meeting was a preparatory conference for World Congress of Families V in Amsterdam, August 10-12.
