New York Times Columnist: Clinton Should Quit to Unite Abortion Supporters

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A New York Times columnist says Hillary Clinton should get out of the race of the Democratic nomination for president so abortion supporters can unite behind pro-abortion hopeful Barack Obama. One news observer says the comment makes it appear promoting abortion is the most important issue.

New York political talk show host and Newsbusters columnist Mark Finkelstein says it was just another "ho-hum piece by another liberal columnist" saying Hillary Clinton should get out of the race so Obama can take on John McCain single-handedly.

But in his column today, Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times makes what Finkelstein says is a candid admission.

Kristof, "almost in passing, makes what is, on reflection, a telling disclosure of what is truly the fundamental value, the uniting principle of the Democratic party: abortion."

The Times' writer frets that Clinton supporters will either stay home or vote for McCain, but he then says abortion is a uniting issue.

"It’s true that most of Senator Clinton’s supporters presumably will flinch if they contemplate a McCain Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade," Kristof writes.

"So what is it that brings Dems together?" Finkelstein asks in his column for the Media Research Center.

"The imperative to end a war in Iraq over which they have expended endless fury? The desire to help those salt-of-the-earthers who work hard and play by the rules to whom they've demagogued shamelessly? Nah," he explained.

"At the end of the day, it's abortion. Abortion is the central, organizational value of the Dem party, the one that will unite it regardless of who is its candidate," he says.

Finkelstein concludes: "The GOP has its serious problems. But what does it say about a party if its single most sacred principle is the preservation of the right to end innocent life."
