Washington,
DC (LifeNews.com) -- The national 40 Days for Life campaign has
mobilized thousands of pro-life advocates and reinvigorated hundreds
of local pro-life groups. The new campaign is preparing for its Spring
events to expose more communities to the pro-life perspective and
offer real pregnancy help for women considering abortion.
David Bereit, national director of 40 Days for Life, shared his enthusiasm on Monday with LifeNews.com.
"As America approaches the 36th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court ruling that imposed abortion on our nation, pro-life advocates are launching the next wave of a unique pro-life campaign," he said.
From February 25 until April 5, people will join together for 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion.
The event includes 40 days of constant, peaceful vigil outside abortion facilities and Planned Parenthood offices and 40 days of intensive pro-life community outreach.
Although the event has been a success in the United States, Bereit says the campaign is going international this year with the hopes that the highly-energized and well-organized pro-life movement in the U.S. can help its colleagues in other nations experience the same success.
"In addition to U.S. cities from coast to coast, we've also received inquiries from Canada and Australia," he said.
The campaign dates coincide with the Christian season of Lent, a season of prayer, fasting and reparation.
"Many Christians who observe Lent are being drawn to 40 Days for Life and its call to offer personal sacrifice in the effort to put an end to the evil of abortion," he said.
The campaign started in late 2007 and Bereit says it has been effective in its short lifespan.
"The efforts of people at the grassroots level have shown a profound impact," he said.
"More than 200 cities have participated thus far, reporting more than 175,000 people united in prayer and fasting. Three abortion facilities closed following 40 Days for Life campaigns, and more than a dozen abortion industry employees have left their jobs during these times of prayerful outreach," he added.
"And most notably, we are aware of 1,128 innocent children who were spared from death by abortion during these campaigns," Bereit told LifeNews.com.
Bereit says Planned Parenthood, the nation's biggest abortion business, has noted the impact of 40 Days for Life's previous efforts. A Planned Parenthood fundraising letter specifically identifies 40 Days for Life as one of the greatest threats to the organization's abortion business.
"Following the tremendous impact experienced during the first three national 40 Days for Life campaigns, I can't wait to see what life-saving results will be accomplished this spring," Bereit concludes.
