Columbia, SC (LifeNews.com) -- South Carolina lawmakers have reached a compromise on a bill to allow women a chance to see an ultrasound of their unborn child. The bill is another measure designed to give women information they don't normally get from an abortion center and to help reduce abortions.

A House-Senate Conference Committee agreed on compromise language that requires abortion practitioners inform a woman of her right to view her ultrasound before an abortion.

The conference committee of three House and three Senate members had been working to reconcile the differences between two different versions of the bill approved last year.

Holly Gatling, the head of South Carolina Citizens for Life, told LifeNews.com the pro-life group supports the reworked measure and hopes it will become law.

"If the compromise is accepted by a two-thirds vote of both the House and the Senate, South Carolina will become the fifteenth state with legislation that requires the abortion industry to inform a woman she has the right to see the ultrasound of her baby before an abortion," she said.

South Carolina already requires abortion centers to do an ultrasound with any abortions after 14 weeks of pregnancy and this measure covers the majority of abortions that take place before that time.

Gatling said abortion advocates have opposed the bill because they know many more women will decide against an abortion once they see the humanity of their unborn child.

"The abortion industry's militant opposition to the ultrasound bill is an indication the pro-aborts are terrified of any discussion of the humanity of the unborn child," she added. "When a pregnant woman chooses life, the abortionist loses money."

A Florida abortion-ultrasound bill has already received the approval of the Florida House and two Senate committees.

Oklahoma legislators approved another bill with an ultrasound requirement and Governor Brad Henry recently vetoed the bill.

Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius is currently considering signing or vetoing a bill that has an ultrasound component.
