Jefferson City, MO (LifeNews.com) -- Gov. Matt Blunt announced the creation of a new program to promote abortion alternatives and help pregnant Missouri women. The program revolves around a toll-free phone number that connects women with pregnancy help and resources.

In a statement sent to LifeNews.com, Blunt said the number, 1-800-AID-U-171 (800-243-8171), puts expectant mothers in touch with services that will help them during pregnancy and the early months of their baby's life.

“This new program will help expectant mothers access the assistance they need to support their pregnancy and new baby," the governor said.

“I believe we have an obligation to support expectant mothers and protect the sanctity and dignity of human life," he added.

The assistance includes medical care, housing, childcare, drug and alcohol treatment, educational services, job training and placement, and help with parenting skills.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services will coordinate the program and provide information and services to women during their pregnancies and up to 12 months following the birth of their babies.

The assistance is available to women with incomes up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level and the services are provided at more than 35 locations across the state.

Help from the state also includes prenatal care, infant care and adoption support.

The health department will promote the new number in posters in retail stores, convenience stores and other public places, and will also use the Internet to reach teens and college students.

Last year, after the legislature approved the new program, Gov. Blunt signed legislation placing Missouri’s Alternatives to Abortion Program in statute to help ensure ongoing support to organizations that help meet the needs of pregnant women and new mothers.
