Abortion advocacy groups are dejected following the shellacking they faced on Tuesday in the Congressional and state midterm elections.
“Yesterday was a difficult day” for the pro-abortion movement, Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards admitted in the opening of an email to supporters of the abortion business today.
“Despite some bright spots in important races — and the resounding defeat of an anti-choice ballot initiative in Colorado — the House of Representatives is now in the hands of dangerous politicians,” she said. “There’s no getting around it: the results of yesterday’s election are truly alarming.”
“Starting today, we have a tough fight on our hands. The months ahead will not be easy. Anti-choice House leaders like John Boehner will be egged on by Sarah Palin and her followers,” she said, calling pro-life advocates “extremists” who will “pursue a dangerous agenda.”
“The stakes are as high as they’ve ever been: their goal is to outlaw abortion, even in cases of rape, incest, and harm to the health of the woman,” she said.
Richard immediately launched into her organization’s main concern, a bill sponsored by pro-life Rep. Mike Pence that would de-fund Planned Parenthood.
“That’s the frightening reality we face, and it’s only going to get worse,” she said before asking for money to help fight it.
In fact, according to tabulations from pro-life blogger Jill Stanek, “Planned Parenthood’s endorsed winning House candidates indicate it believes there are only 151* strong abortion proponents out of 435 representatives, or 34.7%.”
“Planned Parenthood Action played it safe, focusing its 226 House and Senate all Democrat endorsements on pro-abort strongholds, particularly CA and NY. 159 of its candidates won and 60 lost, with 7 races still uncalled,” she said.
Ultimately, she said “Planned Parenthood doctors, nurses, and other staff across the country stand ready to” continue doing abortions, she added.
Meanwhile, Thomas Peters of American Papist noted the facial expression of NARAL president Nancy Keenan literally changed from a happy face to a frown in emails compared from before to after the election.
“On Monday, the day before Tuesday’s elections, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Nancy Keenan signed her letter to supporters (encouraging them to support pro-abort candidates) with this picture of her beaming smile,” he said. “Today, after the crushing defeats suffered by pro-abortion candidates at the polls yesterday, Keenan sent out another letter to her supporters … and this time, her expression had changed.”
“It looks her cause is having a bad day … which is great news for the babies,” he said.
In that email, Keenan said “losing the U.S. House of Representatives to anti-choice politicians” is “difficult” and makes her “frustrated and disappointed.”
“We now face a Congress stacked with extreme anti-choice politicians, but we cannot give our opponents an inch,” she added.
Keenan says she wants to push back hard against the Chris Smith bill that would stop taxpayer funding of abortion at all levels of federal government. She wants to stop the repeal of pro-abortion ObamaCare, oppose reviving funding for abstinence education, and promote more money for Planned Parenthood.
Emily’s List is apparently so distraught about losing the elections that it removed its election tracker off its web site and there is less mention now of the 2010 elections than before Tuesday night.
The organization has yet to send out an email to its supporters.
