A pro-life congressman and his wife proudly announced that they are pregnant with their ninth child this spring, while joking about a Democratic congresswoman’s suggestion that children are an environmental problem.

U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy, of Wisconsin, and his wife, Rachel Campos-Duffy, a Fox News contributor, discussed Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s environmental concerns and how they relate to the family on their new podcast, according to the Daily Wire. They also announced that their ninth child is due in the fall.

“We’ll take AOC’s carbon footprint for ourselves,” Campos-Duffy said jokingly. “We’re also doing our part to bring in the Republican vote, hopefully, to keep these anti-socialist messages going and the Hispanic Republican vote, which you know we need to do that.”

Her husband assured people that their large family means they have hope for the future of America.

“God isn’t done with our family yet! Baby number nine coming to the crew this fall!” he wrote on Twitter last week. “@RCamposDuffy said it best – we aren’t crazy, we are just full of hope for America’s future!”

Their mention of carbon footprints comes from a February comment by Ocasio-Cortez claiming that society needs to take drastic measures to stop climate change. One of her possible solutions is for families to stop having children.

“There’s scientific consensus that the lives of children are going to be very difficult,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “And it does lead, I think, young people to have a legitimate question, you know, is it okay to still have children?”

She continued: “And I mean, not only just financially, because people are graduating with twenty, thirty, a hundred thousand dollars worth of student loan debt, and they can’t even afford to have kids in the house, but also just this basic moral question, what do we do? And even if you don’t have kids, there are still children here who are in the world, and we have a moral obligation to them, to leave a better world for them.”

Ocasio-Cortez is hardly the first person to suggest smaller family sizes as a solution to climate change. Scientists and bioethicists, media personalities and others also have touted the idea that couples should have fewer children to save the environment.

But any hint at government-run population control is frightening. China tried it with its One Child Policy, and the human rights abuses that resulted are horrific: forced abortions, forced sterilizations, oppressively large penalties and more.

What’s more, similar doom predictions about overpopulation have been made for more than a century, and none have come true.
