Dozens of abortion activists protested Monday against one of the last pro-life Democrats in Congress, Illinois Rep. Dan Lipinski.

Last week, he was one of only two Democrats who signed an amicus brief calling on the U.S. Supreme Court to reconsider Roe v. Wade when it hears a Louisiana abortion case in March.

For refusing to bow to the altar of abortion on demand, Lipinski is a major target of the abortion industry. Pro-abortion groups are spending huge amounts of money to back his primary challenger, pro-abortion Democrat Marie Newman.

On Monday, abortion activists with Planned Parenthood, the Will County Progressives, Illinois National Organization for Women (NOW) and other pro-abortion groups showed up at his Lockport office to protest and demand a meeting, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Suzanna Ibarra of the Will County Progressives slammed Lipinski for opposing the Democratic Party’s pro-abortion platform, which supports unrestricted abortions up to birth and taxpayer-funded abortions.

“This is, by far, the last straw for me and many other people,” Ibarra said. “We want awareness brought to this situation. Choice is extremely important to me and women all around the United States of America and abroad. If you can’t even uphold those platforms of the Democratic Party, then you have no right to be elected as a Democrat.”

On the contrary, polls consistently show most Americans strongly oppose taxpayer-funded abortions and late-term abortions, including many Democrats.

Suburban Life reports Holly Fingerly of Indivisible’s South Suburban Chicago chapter accused Lipinski of being anti-woman and anti-science.

“I’m here today to call out Dan Lipinski for failing to trust women and science,” she said. “I’m here because he’s launched an attack on those with uteruses and our freedoms.”

Lipinski responded to the protest by welcoming people to share their views; however, he refused to back down on his pro-life position. He said he supports the Louisiana law because it protects women by requiring abortionists to have hospital admitting privileges for patients suffering from emergency complications.

He referred to the words of fellow pro-life Democrat lawmaker Louisiana state Rep. Katrina Jackson, who wrote the law, to defend his position: “If you are going to perform abortions in the state of Louisiana, you’re going to do so in a safe environment and in a safe manner that offers women the optimal protection and care of their bodies.”

It is telling that abortion activists, who claim to want to protect women’s health and safety, oppose a common-sense abortion law that helps ensure women with emergency complications receive proper medical care.

Lipinski has a strong record of protecting unborn babies. Last spring, he was one of just a handful of Democrats to support the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. He also voted for the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which prohibits abortions after 20 weeks when unborn babies can feel pain.

The Democratic Party has become increasingly radical and out of touch with voters on the abortion issue. The party platform now calls for full support of abortion for any reason up to birth as well as taxpayer funding of abortions, though both are widely unpopular positions among voters.

Democrats for Life estimates more than 23 million Democrats in the U.S. are pro-life. Pew Research found that 28 percent of Democrats say abortion should be illegal in most or all cases. Marist/KofC polling also found that 23 percent of Democrats consider themselves pro-life and 40 percent say abortion is morally wrong.

Many voters are leaving the Democratic Party because of its pro-abortion position. A Massachusetts mayor recently announced his decision to leave, disgusted by the party’s demand that unborn babies be sacrificed and their deaths celebrated.
