A detailed new human rights report found “clear and convincing evidence” that the Chinese government is committing genocide, including forced abortions, against ethnic and religious minorities.
Released Tuesday, the report from the Newlines Institute for Strategy and Policy estimates about 2 million Uyghurs (sometimes spelled Uighurs) have been “eradicated” by the Chinese Communist Party in the past eight years, Forbes reports.
“China’s policies and practices targeting Uyghurs in the region must be viewed in their totality, which amounts to an intent to destroy the Uyghurs as a group, in whole or in part,” the report states.
The independent report, authored by more than 50 international human rights experts, adds to growing evidence of massive human rights abuses in China, ones that pro-life leaders have been warning about for years. Among these are “systematic forced abortions” through all nine months of pregnancy, which China “explicitly admits the purpose … is to ensure that Uyghur women are ‘no longer baby-making machines,’” according to the report.

The government also separates Uyghur families, placing parents in forced labor camps and sending their children to state-run orphanages, the report found. Additionally, it targets men of childbearing age for internment and women of childbearing age for forced abortions and forced sterilizations, it continues.
Women who spent time in the interment camps testified that they were forced to have abortions immediately after being detained if they were pregnant and forcibly fitted with IUDS. Others said they were repeatedly kicked in the stomach during interrogations.
“If you were pregnant when you came to the camp, they performed an abortion,” one woman testified. “If you refused, they took you to a stricter place, one without visits with relatives.”
Some women said they were imprisoned simply because they were pregnant. According to the report, “by far the two most cited reasons for detention or internment are ‘birth policy violations’” and “unsafe persons” of childbearing age.
Rape, torture, forced labor and other abuses also are common in the internment camps, the report noted.
According to Forbes, “eyewitness testimonies and official government documents, concluded the Chinese government ‘bears responsibility for an ongoing genocide’ which involves mass internment, a mass birth-prevention strategy, and other policies and practices geared toward either fully or partially eradicating a population of up to 2 million Uyghurs that’s been detained since 2014.”
The human rights experts said the Chinese Communist Party is violating “each and every act” prohibited in the United Nations Genocide Convention.
“Uyghurs are suffering from systematic torture and cruel, inhumane, and degrading treatment,” the report states.
In January, pro-lifers reacted with horror when the Chinese Embassy in America asserted that its government is helping women in a statement.
“Study shows that in the process of eradicating extremism, the minds of Uyghur women in Xinjiang were emancipated and gender equality and reproductive health were promoted, making them no longer baby-making machines,” the Chinese Embassy wrote on Twitter. “They are more confident and independent.”
Then, during a CNN town hall in February, President Joe Biden caused additional outrage when he described the Uyghur genocide as a different “cultural norm.”
For decades, China had a one child policy that was linked to forced and coerced abortions, not just against the Uyghurs but throughout the country. Recently, the country changed to a two-child policy, but pro-life human rights advocates say forced abortions are still occurring.
In 2020, new reports exposed massive human rights abuses by the Chinese government against the Uighur Muslims, Christians and other minority groups. At least 1 million Uyghur have been placed in “re-education” camps since in 2017, PBS News reports.
A Turkish doctor who used to work for the Chinese Communist Party recently admitted to participating in nearly 600 forced abortions, forced sterilizations and other coercive family planning measures to curtail the Uyghur population in China, The Daily Mail reported last year. The doctor, who later fled to Turkey, said she feels deep regret for participating in the government’s oppressive population control measures.
“We would go village to village, gather all the women and herd them onto tractors,” she told the British news outlet ITV News. “Young women were fitted with contraceptive devices, pregnant women would have to have an abortion then sterilization. We even inserted birth control implants into women’s upper arms to prevent pregnancy.”
The doctor said she once saw a “still-moving” baby thrown into the trash after an abortion.
Echoing stories pro-lifers have been sharing for years, a recent Associated Press report exposed even more of these horrors, including police raids on families’ homes in search of illegal children, families going into hiding to protect their children, government intimidation and more.
Another former Chinese obstetrician, Hasiyet Abdulla, who now lives in Turkey recently told Radio Free Asia about the forced abortions and infanticide that she witnessed in Xinjiang hospitals.
“There were babies born at nine months who we killed after inducing labor,” she said.
In July, the Trump administration issued multiple sanctions against China. Former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the United States will use “the full breadth of its financial powers to hold human rights abusers accountable in Xinjiang and across the world.”
It is not clear if they are still in place under the new Biden administration.
