Police in India arrested a man on suspicion of rape and other crimes this week after a woman accused him of sexually abusing her and then forcing her to abort her unborn baby.
Mirror Now News reports a 26-year-old woman from Udhna, India, reported the man to Pandesara Police on Monday. Police said they arrested Hemachandra Dayma, 29, of Surat, Gujarat, and they are investigating the allegations further.
According to police, the woman said she met Dayma, a credit card salesman for a bank, about a year ago when he tried to sell her a credit card. Times of India reports the woman said the two began chatting after their first meeting, and later he began pressuring her to have a physical relationship with him.
The woman, who is married and has a child, said Dayma took her to a hotel and raped her multiple times. A few weeks ago, she said she told him that she was pregnant, and he bought abortion drugs and forced her to take them, according to the report.
The woman told police that she later learned that Dayma also is married and has a child.

Reports of forced and coerced abortions are more common than people may think. A few weeks ago, another young mother in India told police that her family forced her to abort her five-month unborn baby after she married the baby’s father against their will.
Frequently, coercion is coupled with abuse, and, in some cases, mothers and their unborn babies are abused or killed in other ways after refusing to have an abortion. A 2014 study, “Associations Between Intimate Partner Violence and Termination of Pregnancy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis,” published in PLOS Medicine, found that intimate partner violence, including rape, sexual assault, contraception sabotage and coerced decision-making, was associated with abortion. Another study by the Elliot Institute found a high rate of coerced and forced abortions among post-abortive women, as high as 64 percent.
