For 16 years, Kathleen Wilson has been providing shelter and encouragement to hundreds of pregnant and parenting mothers in crisis.
But not once has the Mary’s Shelter founder ever met a mother who regretted choosing life for her child.
Speaking with Fox News host Tucker Carlson this week, Wilson said she is puzzled by the accusations from U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Massachusetts, and others that pro-life organizations somehow “torture” women and force them to stay pregnant.
“I don’t know why it’s controversial,” Wilson said. “I don’t know why even if somebody’s pro-choice they wouldn’t support a Mary’s Shelter, because these women make a choice. … I hope we never get to the point where we condemn women for having children.”
Founded in 2006 in Fredericksburg, Virginia, Mary’s Shelter operates maternity homes that provide up to three years of housing, counseling, educational/employment assistance, parenting classes and more to pregnant mothers in crisis. According to its website, the pro-life organization has served more than 400 women in the past 16 years.
Wilson said they do not pressure or force mothers into anything; their clients want their babies, and they come to Mary’s Shelter seeking help.

“They love their baby. It’s really that simple. They want their baby,” she told Carlson. “In 16 years, I’ve never had a woman tell me that’s come through Mary’s Shelter that she’s regretted having her child. Never, not ever.”

However, Wilson said she has held women in her arms as they shed tears of grief and regret because of past abortions.
Pro-life advocates care for women and babies, both before and after they are born, she continued. At Mary’s Shelter, she said many pregnant women already have several children when they come seeking help, and they care for them all.
“We do care about the baby in the womb. We love the baby in the womb, but we also love that mom. And women come to us with as many children as they have,” Wilson said. “We love all those kids.”
Pro-life organizations — including maternity homes, pregnancy centers and adoption agencies — serve millions of mothers, fathers and children every year, providing everything from diapers and cribs to temporary housing, medical assistance, parenting classes, career/education help, mentoring and more, all for free to help empower mothers to choose life for their babies.
However, these organizations have become targets of abortion activists’ outrage in response to the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade on June 24. Dozens have been vandalized and several have been set on fire in arson attacks since someone leaked a draft ruling in May.
Meanwhile, pro-abortion Democrat politicians like Warren and Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey have been trying to vilify their work, claiming pro-life organizations mislead and manipulate women into keeping their babies instead of aborting them. Warren even demanded that pro-life pregnancy centers be completely “shut down” last week in an interview.
But helping mothers choose life for their babies is a good thing, and even research by abortion activists supports this. A widely touted study by pro-abortion researchers at the University of California San Francisco found that 96 percent of mothers who were denied abortions later no longer wished that they had had one. In other words, they were glad that they had their babies.
Research by the Charlotte Lozier Institute found an estimated 3,000 pro-life pregnancy resource centers served about 2 million people in 2019, providing more than 730,000 pregnancy tests, nearly half a million ultrasounds, 1.3 million packs of diapers and more than 2 million baby outfits, all for free. Many offer post-abortion counseling as well.
