Actress Whoopi Goldberg contradicted centuries of Christian teachings Wednesday when she claimed God supports a woman’s “choice” to abort her unborn baby.
Goldberg, a co-host of “The View,” made a moral argument for killing unborn babies in abortions, arguing that God created women to be “smart enough” to make choices, the Independent Journal Review reports.
“As you know, God doesn’t make mistakes,” Goldberg said. “God made us smart enough to know when it wasn’t going to work for us. That’s the beauty of giving us freedom of choice.”
Goldberg admitted that her relationship with God is “choppy” because she has a lot of questions about the Christian faith, but then asserted that she knows more than devout Christians about God and abortion.
“You know, my relationship [with God] is always choppy… because I have a lot of questions…” she said. “But I also know that God made me smart enough to know that if there are alternatives that are out there that can work for me, I will investigate them. But I also know, God said, ‘Do unto others as you have them do unto you.’ I will not make that decision for anybody.”
Elisabeth Hasselback, a pro-life guest on the show, called out Goldberg for misunderstanding Christianity and asked why she will not consider that God has a purpose for babies in the womb, too, according to the report.

“What about the life in the womb? Life has a plan and a purpose designed by God,” Hasselback said.
Goldberg replied, “God knows my heart, and God knows most everybody’s heart.”
The problem is Goldberg misunderstands free will and the value that God places on human life.
As IRJ senior writer Bradley Cortright pointed out:
“For those who don’t believe in God, perhaps Goldberg’s claim seems good. But for those who profess to be Christians and believe that our life is not our own, that we aren’t supposed to live solely for our own desires and passions, her claim is a sick perversion of the grace and compassion in the Bible to fit her worldview.”
Christianity teaches that God allows human beings to have free will, meaning they may choose between good and evil. However, that does not mean every choice is correct – as Goldberg seemed to claim – or that making bad choices to sin will be without consequences.
While Bible does not specifically mention the word “abortion,” it does condemn the life-destroying practice. Jesus placed great value on children when others in society did not in Matthew 19:14, and Proverbs 6:16-17 states that one of the things God hates most is the shedding of innocent blood. One of the ten commandments prohibits murder. And even in ancient times, babies in the womb were viewed as valuable, as is evident in Luke 1:41 and Psalm 22:10.
An abortion kills a unique, living human being who, Christianity teaches, is a valuable person created in the image of God. True Christianity raises up the most vulnerable, defends the defenseless and offers compassion to the suffering, including mothers and babies in the womb.
