New changes to the popular family game The Game of LIFE have some questioning if its creators are really anti-family.

According to the Daily Wire, people have been complaining online about the “woke” new edition from Hasbro because of its de-emphasis on children and marriage.

In the old version, “family was wealth, not liability,” said homeschool mom Lindsay Harold whose Facebook post went viral after her daughters got the new version for Christmas.

Now, she said getting married and having children often can be detrimental. The new game even limits the number of children a player may have.

“I expected a nostalgic experience full of memories of playing it as a child. But the game has changed profoundly,” Harold wrote. “… it is now very much a woke game.”

The Game of LIFE has been available for more than a century; Milton Bradley created it in 1860, according to the Daily Wire. There have been numerous themed and traditional editions since then, including versions that reward players for recycling and allow them to have careers in vlogging.

But one of the most obvious changes is its goals centered around family, Harold noticed.

Older versions used to require every player to get married, sometimes with a monetary bonus. Now, the game allows users to choose whether to marry, and, instead of a potential bonus, getting married costs money, Harold said. There is a monetary benefit for marriage and children at the end of the game, but it’s offset by those paths taking longer to complete, which reduces the player’s chance at bonuses for completing the game first, she continued.

Additionally, she said players now can choose to have children without getting married or not to have children at all. She said the chances of having children in the game also is much more limited.

In older versions, “there were lots of baby spaces,” Harold said. “… And each baby endowed you with a LIFE card that paid benefits in retirement. There was no limit to the number of children you could add. If you filled up one car, you could just add a second vehicle to transport your large family. I’ve had 8 or 10 kids before in that game.”

Now, the most children that a player can have is four, and that option can cost extra time and money, she said.

Harold concluded by warning parents about the “dystopian” message that the game sends to children.

“If you want to win this dystopian game of LIFE, it’s best to avoid marriage and children as they cost you and slow you down,” she wrote, ending her post with, “Wokeness ruins everything.”
