A Georgia state lawmaker left the Democratic Party this week after accusing its leaders of “using and abusing the Black community.”
Townhall reports state Rep. Mesha Mainor, of Atlanta, announced her decision to switch parties Tuesday, joining a growing exodus. A North Carolina state representative also left the Democratic Party this spring after she said party leaders “villainized” her for voting her conscience.
Mainor, who was elected to a second term in November, shared similar experiences that prompted her to leave. She said Democrat leaders criticized her for supporting school choice and opposing efforts to defund the police.
“I represent a blue district in the city of Atlanta so this wasn’t a political decision for me. It was a MORAL one,” she said in a statement Tuesday on Twitter. “I will NEVER apologize for being a black woman with a mind of my own.”

LifeNews could not find anything about Mainor’s stance on abortion, but other lawmakers who recently left the party have pointed to the issue as one of the reasons for their switch. Democratic Party leaders now support abortion without restriction through all nine months of pregnancy and want to force taxpayers to fund the killing of unborn babies – positions that are extreme and out of touch with most Americans.
In an interview Tuesday with Fox News, Mainor said the party has become much too extreme in recent years, embracing “left-wing radicalism” and “lawlessness,” and putting “the interests of illegal aliens over the interest of Americans.”
She accused her colleagues of “crucifying” her when she refused to tow the party line on issues like school choice and Black Lives Matter’s calls to “defund the police.”
“They crucified me. When I decided to stand up in support of safe communities and refused to support efforts to defund the police, they didn’t back me. They abandoned me,” she said.
Echoing similar comments from pro-life advocates, Mainor said the Democratic Party uses Black voters, taking their support for granted and then pushing policies that hurt them.
“For far too long, the Democrat Party has gotten away with using and abusing the black community,” Mainor told Fox.
Pro-abortion Democrat lawmakers frequently mention Black women when they push for laws to expand abortions. Parroting the talking points of the abortion industry, they claim women need to abort their unborn babies to be free and healthy.
But abortions are destroying the African American community. Black women have the highest abortion rate of any racial group, as well as the highest maternal mortality rate, and research from Life Issues Institute found that the abortion industry specifically targets minority women and their unborn babies. The abortion industry spends tens of millions of dollars every year on elections, primarily supporting Democrat candidates for office.
An estimated 20 million unborn African American babies have been aborted since 1973. In New York City, city health statistics frequently show that more African American babies are aborted than are born annually.
Democratic Party leaders claim increasing abortion access will help African Americans, but aborting unborn babies is not a solution to maternal mortality, poverty, abuse, poor education options, crime, housing and other problems plaguing the Black community.
Pro-life advocates are the ones offering real solutions. A number of Republican-led states recently voted to expand tax credits and Medicaid to pregnant and parenting mothers, and support programs that provide free diapers and cribs, ultrasounds and pregnancy tests, temporary shelter, scholarships, financial aid and more.
