Another Catholic university has been exposed for supporting killing unborn babies in abortions.
According to The College Fix, the University of San Diego in California pays for elective abortions through its student and employee health plans even though the Catholic Church teaches that abortion is a grave moral evil.
University leaders said state and federal law require them to cover abortions. But recent court victories against a California pro-abortion mandate suggest the university may not be trying that hard to follow its foundational beliefs about the sanctity of human life.
Lissette Martinez, senior director of media relations for the university, told The Fix that “state and federal regulations” require that they cover abortions, as well as transgender medical treatments.
“The services mentioned are typically those that are required to be covered, and individuals are encouraged to consult with their medical provider regarding the best course of treatment for any medical concern,” Martinez said.
However, she did not answer follow-up questions asking what federal and state regulations require coverage for elective abortions or transgender treatments, according to the report.
California does require most health insurance plans to cover elective abortions, but two federal court rulings determined that the state must allow religious freedom exemptions for churches that believe killing unborn babies is wrong.

The Fix asked University of San Diego leaders if they plan to seek an exemption or challenge the mandate, as several churches did, but did not receive a response. It also questioned the “federal regulations” that the University of San Diego mentioned, noting that other Catholic universities do not cover elective abortions in their student or employee health plans.
For years, Students for Life, The Fix, LifeNews and others have called out Christian universities for supporting killing unborn babies in abortions, whether it be by promoting abortion facilities on their websites, covering elective abortions in student health plans or welcoming abortion activists on campus.
Past investigations by The College Fix found that the University of San Francisco and Loyola University Chicago, both of which are Catholic, also cover elective abortions in their health plans.
In 2021, Students for Life released a report identifying 25 Christian universities that promote or work with the billion-dollar abortion chain Planned Parenthood. Some described the abortion group as a “trusted resource” on their websites, others hosted events with Planned Parenthood or advertised internships for the abortion chain. As a result of the report, several universities did end their connections to Planned Parenthood.
At some Christian schools, however, abortion advocacy continues. In April, the University of Notre Dame faced criticism from students and alumni for allowing a transgender abortion doula to speak on campus.
