“Defund Planned Parenthood” has been the campaign battle cry of many a conservative Republican, but as the Government Accountability Office report released by Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) on December 12, 2023, shows, any stoppage of the massive flow of taxpayer monies to the abortion giant has proven to be a myth.

Ed Martin, director of Stop Planned Parenthood International (STOPP), American Life League’s Planned Parenthood watchdog division, pointed out that the report shows that nearly $2 billion of taxpayer money has been given to that organization over a three-year period.

“Wow! That’s a lot, and that’s not good,” exclaimed Martin, “but that is exactly what we’ve been warning about at STOPP.”

The government report shares some condemning details. For one, Martin highlights the nearly $90 million of COVID pandemic money that went to Planned Parenthood under the federal Paycheck Protection Program.

“This program was implemented under the Small Business Administration to aid small businesses, yet the government doled out big money to this abortion vendor who pays their CEOs an annual average compensation of $317,564,” noted Martin. He added that the report describes the reality that Planned Parenthood continues to be supported by bipartisan funding packages.

Martin called out the duplicity of legislators who vote to support massive spending packages that include the funding of Planned Parenthood, justifying their action by referring to these abortion businesses as “health services,” “education,” and “counseling.”

“This is a lie,” explained Martin. “All of this spending is aimed at persuading women to abort and to undermine the fight for life.”

“The contraception racket is a big moneymaker for Planned Parenthood,” added Martin. “Their message is that ‘women deserve contraception and the government should pay for it.’ Too many legislators are buying into this line of thinking. It’s a huge moneymaker for Planned Parenthood, and it is also part of why Planned Parenthood tries to call abortion drugs ‘emergency contraception.’”

Martin decried the “gamesmanship around funding and uses of funding” calling it “the corruption of the modern American government.”

“For all their campaign talk, Republicans have not defunded Planned Parenthood. We at STOPP encourage Congress to continue to push for more transparency in all funding,” Martin said. “Our legislators must be honest with the American people and upfront about the truth that they are voting for abortion funding.”
