If someone wants to kill a baby in an abortion just because the baby is glad or a girl, that’s okay with Virginia Democrats.
Members of the party voted down a bill to ban abortions for that specific reason today in the House committee.
House Bill 1184, carried by Del. Phillip Scott, R-Spotsylvania, would have prohibited abortions if a person sought them on the basis of the sex or race of the fetus. The panel voted it down 5-3 on a party-line vote with Democrats voting for abortions based on race or sex of the baby.

Scott expressed frustration that the panel, led by Democrats, heard his bill and Griffin’s at the same time. Scott said his bill was more narrow in scope.
He described situations where someone could seek to terminate a pregnancy because they didn’t want the sex of the fetus or how someone could feel they couldn’t have a mixed-race child.
The bills garnered support in public testimony from anti-abortion groups like the Virginia Society For Human Life and the Family Foundation. They likewise drew opposition from pro-abortion groups like Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia and ReproRising.
