Abortions in Indiana have dropped to just 15 a month as the state’s abortion ban is saving thousands of babies from abortions.
The newest data released by the Indiana Department of Health on February 29 lists a total of 46 abortions in Indiana in the fourth quarter of 2023, the lowest fourth quarter totals in over 50 years.
Indiana Right to Life President and CEO Mike Fichter told LifeNews that this is excellent news – especially since thousands of babies would have otherwise been aborted without the ban in place.
“While we are encouraged abortion numbers fell in Indiana to the lowest fourth quarter numbers in five decades, we grieve the loss of 46 children and renew our commitment to making Indiana a state where every pregnant mother receives compassionate support and every baby’s life is protected,” he said.
Fichter said the state government is making it hard to collect and analyze the data so groups like IRTL can help women and protect babies.
“Many serious challenges remain, including the fact that the Indiana Department of Health is blocking public access to terminated pregnancy reports,” he said. “This manipulation creates a lack of transparency, making it impossible to verify these numbers are accurate – and that Indiana law is being followed related to abortion activity. We urge the Indiana legislature to act now by requiring IDH to follow the law in abortion reporting.”

Other reports from late 2023 also indicate the Indiana abortion ban is saving unborn children.
Guttmacher “released the latest round of data from its Monthly Abortion Provision Study, covering the period from January through August 2023. The latest estimates include initial insights into the effects of a total abortion ban in Indiana, where abortions dropped to essentially zero, as well as the continued impact of severe restrictions recently implemented in North Carolina.”
The Monthly Abortion Provision Study “continues to do what it is designed to do—giving us near-real time insights into how the rapidly shifting state policy landscape is impacting abortion access,” says Isaac Maddow-Zimet, data scientist at Guttmacher and project lead for this research effort. “Among other findings, this month’s data show the initial impact of the total ban in Indiana, and in future months we hope to better understand its ripple effects in neighboring states.”
Guttmacher summarized the situation in Indiana thusly: “Abortions Drop 100% in Indiana.” The number of abortions in July was almost 700.
