Salt Lake City police arrested a man on the morning of Sunday, May 26, after he allegedly walked into a Catholic Cathedral during Mass and began assaulting people with a wooden sword.
The attacker, Chandler Grillone, 31, faces two felony charges of aggravated assault, one misdemeanor assault charge, and one charge of property damage under $5,000, along with charges of disorderly conduct and interfering with a police officer, according to local reports.
Probable cause documents state that Grillone entered Salt Lake City’s Cathedral of the Madeleine “without provocation or any indication of reasoning,” and proceeded to attack several individuals in attendance.

Grillone allegedly struck two of his victims with a bamboo wooden sword before attacking a third member of the laity with his fists, breaking their glasses, according to the report. Grillone also resisted arrest, “twisting away,” and attempting to escape before officers forced him into a patrol car.
None of the victims knew Grillone before the incident, which authorities believe to have been completely random. No lasting injuries have been reported.
Grillone is currently being held at Salt Lake County Jail.
