ERA Minnesota is calling for a special session before new lawmakers take office in January to try to push through a failed bill for a proposed Equal Rights Amendment, which would (among other controversial provisions) enshrine unlimited abortion in the state Constitution. The ERA bill did not pass through the legislature this past spring, and voters have now elected an incoming House unlikely to support such a measure.

“With the high cost of living, plummeting school scores, and a state government riddled with scandals, Minnesotans clearly don’t want our elected officials spending their time and taxpayer dollars to pass even more extreme legislation,” said MCCL Co-Executive Director Cathy Blaeser. “They don’t want a constitutional amendment that would destroy more unborn children, harm more women with dangerous chemical abortions, and deny religious liberties and the rights of parents. Voters have seen too much of that already and have just rejected it. They’ll continue to make their voices heard in St. Paul.”
The proposed ERA (SF 37) would enshrine unlimited abortion while excluding protections for age, conscience, and religious liberty; it even removes protection for “creed” that was included in a previous version. A KSTP/SurveyUSA poll this spring found that 64 percent of Minnesotans don’t want abortion included in an Equal Rights Amendment.
