EMILY’s List, the Democratic political action committee that supports pro-abortion female candidates, is no stranger to extreme pro-abortion rhetoric.
In order to receive the group’s endorsement, a candidate must espouse the most radical elements of the abortion movement including partial-birth abortion and taxpayer funding of abortion. On Tuesday, the group held a Washington DC fundraiser in where a handful of pro-abortion senators took the opportunity to declare that the Republican Party is currently waging a “war on women.”
Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), a long-time supporter of abortion-on-demand, made the assertion, citing Republican opposition to taxpayer funding for abortion and funding for abortion providers like Planned Parenthood. Despite the over-the-top claims by Boxer and EMILY’s List, polls actually show American women agree with the pro-life movement that their tax dollars should not be used to fund abortion.
Accompanied by Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Amy Klobaucher (D-MN), Claire McCaskill (D-MO), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Boxer urged EMILY’s List donors to give generously to help the group elect more pro-abortion female officials. “The best way to fight back in this war is to elect more women,” she said.
If anyone is waging “a war on women,” it’s the pro-abortion Democratic Senate majority, which has voted down or blocked votes on common sense pro-life legislation supported by the majority of American women. The Obama Administration and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid have effectively silenced the voices of pro-life women.
Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), the most solidly pro-life female voice in the US Senate, has called for more pro-life women to run for office to join her in Congress to defend the rights of women and their unborn children.
In 2010, a record number of pro-life women, like Ayotte, were elected to Congress. Consequently, the Susan B. Anthony List, the organization that empowers pro-life female candidates, declared 2011 “The Year of the Pro-Life Woman Legislator.” Over the past year, these female leaders have challenged the abortion lobby like never before. Speaking out on bills like the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act and the Protect Life Act, pro-life female members of Congress were enormously persuasive.

With public opinion and electoral trends moving toward the pro-life position, abortion advocates like EMILY’s List are nervous. Undoubtedly pro-abortion groups will be spending big bucks on the 2012 elections. Pro-life advocates must rally behind candidates that share our respect for life and work tirelessly in the coming year to ensure the right candidates are elected. Legislation is one of the most effective avenues we have to save lives but we need pro-life legislators, particularly the influential voices of pro-life female legislators, to cast those key votes.
