In an interview with the Columbus Dispatch newspaper, presidential candidate Mitt Romney said, once again, that he wants the Supreme Court to overturn the infamous Roe v. Wade decision that has paved the way for 55 million abortions.
Romney wants states to be able to protect unborn children and, in his interview with the newspaper, indicated overturning Roe was more possible in the current political climate than a Human Life Amendment.
“That’s not where America is now,” he said. “I would love us to be in a situation where the American people decide let’s not have abortion. But that’s not where we are. That’s why I think the most effective next step is to have the court return the decision with regards to abortion to the American people and their elected representatives.”
“And it is my preference that would return to the states and to the people and their elected representatives the issue of abortion as opposed to having the federal government impose, the Supreme Court impose its view on a one-vote majority. But that’s something that will be up to the court. That’s not something I can decide as president, that’s something which the court would have to decide,” Romney continued.
Romney also talked about a prior interview with the Des Moines newspaper in which he said he would install the Mexico City Policy that would stop funding to international groups like Planned Parenthood that promote and perform abortions overseas.
“What I do have is an executive order which I will put in place on Day 1, to see that the Mexico City policy is put back in place,” he said. “By the way, I said that to the Des Moines Register. The Mexico City policy, and I will also, as has been pointed out in ads here frequently, I will not fund Planned Parenthood through federal funding.”
Romney has repeatedly called for overturning Roe — doing so in January and again in April — and he repeated his desire to see it overturned in an interview on “Meet the Press” in September.
Whereas Democrats made their pro-abortion position a centerpiece of their convention in Charlotte last week, Romney made his pro-life views clear in the interview.
“Well, I don’t actually make the decision the Supreme Court makes and so they’ll have to make their own decision,” he said about Roe. “And it would be my preference that they reverse Roe V. Wade and therefore they return to the people and their elected representatives the decisions with regards to this important issue. And I hope to appoint justices for the Supreme Court that will follow the law and the constitution.”

Romney also made it clear he would reverse President Barack Obama’s decision to overturn the Mexico City Policy that has been in place under pro-life presidents. The policy protects taxpayers by ensuring their tax dollars do not go to groups that promote and perform abortions internationally. Obama reversed the pro-life policy during his first days in office in 2009 and Romney said he would put the pro-life policy against funding pro-abortion groups back in place.
“But, for instance, I’ll reverse the president’s decision on using U.S. funds to pay for abortion outside this country,” Romney said. “I don’t think also the taxpayers here should have to pay for abortion in this country. Those things I think are consistent with my pro-life position.”
As to abortion itself, Romney replied to a question from host David Gregory with: “Well there are a number of things I think need to be said about preserving and protecting the life of the unborn child and I recognize there are two lives involved; the mom’s and the unborn child. I believe that people of good conscience have chosen different paths in this regard but I have chosen pro-life and I will attempt as president to encourage pro-life policies,” Romney stated.
