Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — House Republican leader John Boehner will receive an award from the National Right to Life Committee next month and give a keynote address to the organization’s national convention next month in Pittsburgh. This is the second time Boehner will have received a pro-life award.
The first came when Americans United for Life presented Boehner with an award recognizing the role he played in leading the fight against including abortion funding in the national health care bill President Barack Obama signed into law.
Although the Obama health care measure contains massive abortion funding, Boehner is credited with getting every Republican member of the House to vote against it and earning the support of nearly enough pro-life Democrats to stop it.
National Right to Life co-executive director Darla St. Martin told LifeNews.com she is pleased Boehner will address the convention and receive the National Right to Life Legislative Leadership Award.
"Congressman John Boehner has been an outspoken supporter of the most vulnerable members of our society," she said. "Throughout the battle over President Obama’s health care bill, Leader Boehner worked tirelessly to defend the rights of unborn children, the elderly, and the medically dependent and disabled."
"We are thrilled that Leader Boehner will join us for this year’s National Right to Life Convention," added St. Martin. "His dedication to our great cause will be an inspiration to everyone in attendance."
When he received the AUL award, Boehner became emotional during his acceptance speech as he talked about his family and the late pro-life Rep. Henry Hyde, the pro-life luminary whose name still adorns the annual amendment to stop taxpayer funded abortions outside the health care bill.
"Look, Henry Hyde was a hero of mine," he said. "I’ve always believed that life begins at conception. I’ve always thought abortion was wrong, and speaking out against it was never difficult. It was a moral position I felt very strongly about."
Boehner’s address and award presentation will take place on Saturday, June 26, at the Hyatt Regency Pittsburgh International Airport.
His speech is part of the annual National Right to Life Convention which annually brings together thousands of pro-life grassroots activists from across the country.
The three-day convention features five general sessions, more than 60 workshops, annual Prayer Breakfast and closing banquet. The convention was last held in Pittsburgh in 2002.
