With the faith of a child, young Jack Thimons began a campaign to change the heart of pro-abortion New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo through prayer and fasting.
The Tablet reports 9-year-old Jack was so upset when New York passed a radical pro-abortion law in January that he decided he needed to do something.
He began by writing a letter to Cardinal Timothy Dolan and the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, an order that he regularly volunteers within Manhattan, according to the report.
“I was really upset about abortion, and didn’t want it to keep going on,” Jack said.
In January, New York lawmakers passed an expansive pro-abortion law that allows abortions for basically any reason up to birth. They also repealed a state law that required medical care for viable infants who survive abortions and another that allowed criminal prosecution against people who kill an unborn baby in an act of violence against the mother.
Cuomo, who claims to be Catholic, signed the law and then celebrated by ordering that state landmarks be lit in pink.
The law sparked national outrage, and Jack, though young, could not remain quiet about the injustice.
He said the Franciscan priests encouraged him to begin an online campaign to restore protections for unborn babies and change pro-abortion lawmakers’ hearts. In April, he and his father set up ConvertCuomo.com, a website that encourages people to pray and fast for an end to abortion and the conversion of pro-abortion lawmakers like Cuomo.
“I know that the rosary is sharper than any sword, so I’m guessing that this idea is the second strongest,” Jack said on his website.

So far, more than 2,100 people have committed to pray and fast through Jack’s website. The family said they plan to send the prayers to the governor at some point.
“It feels like I am very close to getting him converted,” Jack said. “I hope that we get so many [prayers from people], and that one day Gov. Cuomo sees the website and sees how many people are praying for him.”
Jack also is urging people to pray on Oct. 22 for the repeal of the pro-abortion law. Catholic Churches in New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland plan to hold Light Up New York Masses in connection with his campaign.
“For a young fellow who has just gone through his first Holy Communion, to have that spirit within him to understand how important life is, from the moment of conception until our last dying breath … it shows the importance of mother and father raising their children in that way,” said Father Patrick Buckley, the priest at Jack’s church.
Buckley said he is very proud of Jack for having the courage to stand up for what is right.
“We are called, as Pope Francis said, to be a beacon of light, to stand up for what we believe in and to do it with love. That’s the most important thing. Who better is an example of love than a child?” he said.

Jack is not alone. Polls show strong public opposition to abortion on demand. A recent national poll by Marist University found that a majority of Americans oppose late-term abortions. Similarly, a poll released in February found a sharp, double-digit uptick in the number of Americans who identify as pro-life after pro-abortion Democrats began pushing abortions up to birth and infanticide.
